New modeling indicates that the Chicxulub meteor probably did not cause the eruptions of the Deccan Traps. Still a hell of an impact, though, 2 million times an H bomb!

So why did the Deccan Traps go off THEN? That kind of volcanism is almost unique.

Unusual, but not unique. Similar flood basalt eruptions have occurred in Siberia, Canada, Iceland, Ethopia, and the northwestern United States.

There are lots of theories on how they form. A mantle plume at a tectonic rift boundary (think Hawaii meets Iceland) is one of the simpler ones.
